Making a Difference in the Parkinson’s Community: A Spotlight on the Parkinson’s Foundation’s Newest Grants

The Parkinson’s Foundation, known for its unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s disease (PD), has recently awarded close to $1 million in community grants. These grants aim to support and uplift people living with PD in as many as 35 states. What’s even more commendable is the foundation’s focus: addressing unmet health, wellness, and educational needs.

John L. Lehr, the President and CEO of the Parkinson’s Foundation, believes in the power of local communities. According to Lehr, these “community-based grants empower leaders of meaningful Parkinson’s programs who both understand and are equipped to address the local community’s most pressing needs.” Such an investment showcases the Foundation’s ongoing dedication to making a significant positive impact in the lives of every individual touched by PD, regardless of their background.

This year, the community grants have been diverse, with amounts ranging between $10,000 and $25,000 per beneficiary. The focus for the 2023 grant cycle is on three pivotal areas:

  1. Educating and offering exercise programs specifically curated for those with PD.
  2. Supporting PD care partners, acknowledging their crucial role in the lives of those with the condition.
  3. Bridging the gap between mental health and PD, understanding the profound intertwining of both aspects in the lives of those with Parkinson’s.

One of the recipients, Megan Munoz, who is the recreation supervisor for the “Get Living with Parkinson’s” program in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, spoke warmly about the initiative. Munoz explained the program’s mission: to focus on the all-encompassing well-being of those with PD - physical, mental, emotional, and social. And with the new grant, they’re poised to extend their reach, ensuring every person in their community and beyond who can benefit does so.

Over the past decade, the Parkinson’s Foundation has remained committed to community upliftment. Since 2011, an impressive sum of over $10.4 million has been invested in 787 community-based initiatives. The Foundation’s work doesn’t just stop at granting funds; they’re building bridges, creating communities, and making sure every person with PD knows they’re not alone in their journey.
