Gender disparities in healthcare and representation in research are prevalent, especially in young onset Parkinson disease (YOPD), but being a woman who is young onset creates unique challenges that are often not addressed. We will discuss the unique experiences of women and people with Parkinson’s who can get pregnant, including how menstruation impacts medication effectiveness, as well as how pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause impact symptoms. Kristi LaMonica, PhD, studies YOPD and its specific impacts on women as an Associate Professor at Russell Sage College. Dr. LaMonica was diagnosed with YOPD in 2020. She will discuss why women often conceal their symptoms and how depression is addressed within this population.
