Parkinson Hallucinations

A Neighbor today told me people that have parkinsons hallucinate Can someone explain to me about hallucinations is it caused by medication or is it just part of parkinsons.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation hallucinations and delusions occur in 20-30%of Parkinson’s patients as they progress. If someone experiences this they should consult with their doctor to rule out another possibility like a UTI or another infection like pneumonia, a new medication and/or you were given wrong medication or dose at refill. They indicated that it is possible that one could hallucinate when one increases their dosage of Sinemet, but one shouldn’t when their medication remains stable.

Thank you so much for that information That really cleared things up for me thanks again

Thank you :grinning:

I see things out of the corner of my eye a lot it’s a scary feeling but I know it’s not real.

What Dawn said it’s good info. Hi Dave hope this helps

I’ve started to experience this over the last couple of weeks. @LifeofBrian_365 mentioned this recently. The other day I was sitting by the window and I swore I saw some animal walk by outside in the corner of my eye. In some other instances I thought I’ve seen a large bug or beetle scurry across the floor to only find out it was nothing.

I have that, too. Makes me jumpy. I especially don’t like it when I’m driving.

I refuse to open my eyes in a dark room. Like I already know I’m going to think the chair is moving or something weird

I get Olfactory Hallucinations. Phantom smells that nobody else can smell. Always something foul like burnt tar or rotting meat. Drives me nuts!

Same with me Martin, except I usually smell smoke of some sort.

I recently started seeing the msd (movement specialist disorder, Neurologist) and I explained to him anytime I get into a car (as a passenger cause I can’t drive anymore) I would have horrible Hallucinations in which I would swear we were going to wreck! It was so horrible but he took me off a few meds and I haven’t experienced anything since as of yet

What meds did you get taken off of? If you don’t mind me asking?

Ropinirole was the main culprit for the hallucinations then propinarole not sure the spelling on that one but that was the reason my asthma was acting up, which that was actually a blood pressure medicine my psychiatrist to give me for an anxiety it was causing breathing issues and also the falling over and stuff

I have been on Ropinrole over 6 years never had any issues. But my Neurologist wouldn’t give me any more than what I am on now due to side effects. He never said what those were but guessing what you experienced. Glad I wasn’t put on a high dose. I was just recently put on propranolol no side effects either except lowering my blood pressure, which I needed. But like the other one I am on a really small dose.

had hallucinations almost every night for over 1 year my neurologists said it was side effects from meds,I was taking LD/CD I had dreams and visions of squirrel’s or rats biting my feet. I would try to kick them or catch them with no luck. I finally changed meds I tried several new Parkinson’s meds with little improvement. My Doc suggested I try Rytary and after several tries with different doses I got of my bed buddies. (mostly) I still have a visitor once in awhile but not squirrels . I have vivid dreams of people walking about that I do not recognize from time to time. I never disclosed these dreams to any one but my wife for fear they would think I’m nuts.

Are you sure that you are hallucinating and not just having a nightmare? Are you awake when you have them? Parkinson’s medication can cause nightmares especially if you take your loss dose close to bedtime. Many people with Parkinson’s have vivid dreams and act them out.

Thanks for the input, there are so many different definitions of Hallucinations or vivid dreams nightmares it’ hard to know which is which. I did finally get a little relief with the new meds. I also have double vision that my optometrist said could be causing my eyes to play tricks on me. He suggested special glasses with Prisms. they do help .
