One of the Parkinson’s symptoms that I have been dealing with lately is the loss of balance. It is the worst when I am experiencing off-times. I will be standing in one place and all of a sudden, I will start to fall backwards, stumbling as I go. Fortunately I have not fallen yet but I have come very close. This is especially difficult when I’m trying to put pants on or if I’m in the shower. I am starting to think that I may need to install handles in my shower but I haven’t done so yet.
For anyone that has not experienced this, if you have ever been on a boat that is swaying back-and-forth, forcing you to stumble in the effort to remain standing, that is exactly how it feels.
I’m experiencing this big time ! Exactly the same! Putting on pants, just standing at stove! It’s like being on a swaying boat! I mentioned it to my neurologist and he acted like that wasn’t a Parkinson symptom! I’ve read everywhere that it is! I’m thinking about changing neurologist, I’ve only seen him twice, but he doesn’t inspire confidence!
I have experienced this quite a few times recently too. I have had the handles in my shower for quite a few months now. I just have the ones with the suction cup right now but it seems to work well sticking to the walls. I have 3 just in case. My loss of balance happens during my off time as well. But no falls. I just try to make sure that my house is clean and there’s nothing I can trip over.
Yes! That’s exactly how it feels! I’m putting that in my notes for my next MDS visit. Sometimes what helps me, when that feeling happens, is I think “Sit” and bend my knees slightly, and put my weight down in my heels. (It’s an equestrian thing, I think!) If I can lower my center of balance, that keeps me from wobbling. I was watching a webinar that talked about the brain changing where it thinks your center of balance is - lots of great info - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AegsgmP5vpo
I’ve experienced loss of balance issues for the past few years. Just in the beginning, I chalked it up to me just being clumsy. But now in the last year and a half or so, as more symptoms had started to come on for me pretty rapidly I knew it was now Parkinson’s related.
Hello everyone a little over a month ago I had major problems with balance I felt that I was going to fall just standing still I had to hold on to what was ever around taking a shower was almost Impossible And getting dressed was very difficult. This went on for quite a few weeks. I just couldn’t imagine what was wrong with me. I do have a bad back so I thought it was related to my back. Well, I went to see a neurologist As he ran me through some tests. He told me I’m going to give you a prescription. If you feel a big difference with the first pill you have parkinsons wow What a magic pill. This little pill gave me my life back. It’s nice to hear from some of You that have the same symptoms when you’re not medicated. Thanks for sharing.
I haven’t had it yet. I am on track to have it early next year. Right now I am trying to gather feedback from people that have already had it (for my benefit and others).
Hey David. Glad you brought up leg pain! I will describe mine to you, and you can let me know if it seems to be how yours feels. I have been getting pain in my left leg down from the inner thigh down to my calf almost feels like it’s pain in the main vein. I have not attributed it to Parkinson’s or thought that it would be related. But it is on my list of things to discuss with my doctor. Let me know how your leg pain feels. I’m curious. Welcome to the group!
Hello Annebond,
Before I was diagnosed I had severe pain in my upper thighs and caves, which caused me almost to fall. The pain was so bad I couldn’t stand up. Once I got diagnosed.
Which was only 2 months ago I was given a prescription for c/l that Little magic pill took 90% of the pain away. Let me know when you go to your doc if What you’re experiencing is coursed by parkinson’s.
Enjoy your day
Again I have this balance problem too, My meds don’t work well all the time I carry a cane with me all the time just in case and it has saved me several times. unfortunetly not every time and I fell in the driveway and broke my arm, no fun, This parkinson has no mercy I was diagnosed in 2015 so the longer you have it the scarier it gets. Glad I have a great wife to help me through the day. I also have invested in bed bars I use them to help me get out of bed /shower and also have given in to sitting down when getting dressed. I’m probably rambling on but sketchers SLIP ON shoes are great don’t have to sit down to put on.
